Seconds - Sometimes a Second classification has nothing to do with quality.I just purchased a large batch of 2014 NAMM Show guitars that are seconds because they were on display for 4 days and available to pickup and play, which many of them were and will show signs of it, exactly like all guitars at the local store. They are several other reasons they will Second guitars, some are imported for special promo events that went unsold, were offered to all dealers, and went unsold. To clear the inventory they have to technically be classified as seconds to justify the discount they have to give to move them. Seconds are also Demo service guitars they need to move. Some of the batch below are Seconds but thankfully I was due there for an errand when they sold them so I picked them up before they had a chance to stamp them S. AR2619CS  - Second Stock - Sample. I thought it was going to be the show guitar, but I didn't think it was, grain just not perfect. But on closer examination the same little patch of scratches on the neck pickup is present on the 2014 NAMM show guitar confirming this is that guitar. The slight differences in grain pattern caused by the angle of the light showing the flip side of the grain  The guitar is near perfect, and the only reason it's a Second is because they take the plastic off the pickups to show them, and it was probably picked up and twinked on by a few reps. It does have about 5 light fingernail scratches, and a little squiggle scratchy patch on the top of the neck humbucker. The bass side of the bridge dulled from fingerprints that had sat on it too long. Under inspection this guitar is 9.95, now 9.5 because it has a very light S stamped in the back of the head. In the box it flew to Hoshino in, sporting JAL stickers, and marked SAMPLE. AR2619CS - Second Stock - 2015 NAMM show guitar [picture here] that survived the shop in perfect condition. It's got no blems except the double super lightly tapped S on the back of the headstock, nothing else. It has a few light scratches under the low E string on the top of the neck pickup, but very tough to fault that. AR2619AV_F1830679 - SECOND STOCK - Description tag marked "Dent on back", obviously a dealer return as they marked it with a tape arrow, but I don't see this ever slipping by the checkers in Bensalem, I believe the dealer smacked it on inspection and returned it. Just my theory, the checkers that handle the guitars in this range wouldn't miss it. It's about 1/2" x 1/4", good thing is it is in the middle of the back where you can buckle rash it all you want. Otherwise it's a beautiful build with beautiful woods and perfect string alignment. S stamped lightly on the back of the head. AR2619AV - Second Stock - I searched for 1/2 hour, wiped the guitar down like I would before delivery examining every square cm, and I cannot figure out why this guitar is a second. It's got a superb maple top, no blems except the double super lightly tapped S on the back of the headstock, nothing else. It has a few lighter streaks in the ebony but that's just the way ebony is going to be in the new Taylor controlled ebony market and definitely no reason for any downgrade. I'm stumped! ARZ6UCBKF_F1400885 - SECOND STOCK - There is no description tag but there are typical signs found on NAMM Show guitars. It's covered in plenty of fingerprints but the pickups verify it is the 2015, and 2016 NAMM Show guitar, replaced in 2017 by the UCS. After a thorough wipedown it survived the 2 shows in surprisingly clean condition with very light long scratching on the back with onother handling mark distorting the matte finish, a couple bright spots on the back of the neck where a touch turned it shinny, there is a strange angular line radiating from the bottom corner of the bridge pickup mounting ring running toward the neck which is raised and underneath the paint, and several little dots that are natural paint anomalies like a splatter dot.  S stamped on the back of the head. ARZ6UCSBKF_F1609021 - SECOND STOCK - Description tag marked "dent on side" and scratched out is "stripped height adjustment screw", which I checked and is not, or was replaced. There is a very shallow bruise on the bottom side, there is also a scuff running out from under the tailpiece. From the amount of fingerprints that were on it I assumed it was the show guitar but it isn't, but very well could have been the sales meeting guitar used before a "real" UCS came in for the show. I didn't note because I did not know at the time but HUSA converted inventory UC's to UCS's, the master tech refretted them with stainless and I can tell this is a converted UC, not only by the early 2016 serial number [for a 2017 model] but by the way the ends are finished, better than Fujigen. So whatever it was it's one of the converted UC to UCS spec that was handled enough I believe it was the demo for the sales meeting. AS200VYS_F1919251 - SECOND STOCK - Tag marked alot of things but the jist is the pickguard binding was coming off and it was about to be discontinued so they marked it glue binding back on and Second. Whoever they gave it to should not be allowed to touch glue, but at least it's only on the pickguard. I'm ordering a new one which is in stock, few weeks, this guitar is way too nice to be sold like this. Aside from the guard there are a few pick scratches on the neck pickup and a very light S on the back of the headstock, but the woods and the craftsmanship are incredible. AF200BS_F1919057 - Second Stock - The tag  marked corrosion on the tailpiece and on the lower 2 lines it's crusty. The guitar is an anomaly though. Maybe the NAMM show guitar, I wasn't there because of the accident so I don't have pictures of the guitars, but the plastic is off the guard and it has about 5 fingernail scratches on it, so it seems like it could be a show guitar. It survived the show with 3 deeper scratches on the face of the headstock near the treble tip. Otherwise it has just a few fingernail scratches on the pickguard, plastic removed [the guard not very well polished at manufacture with light sanding scratches no fully polished out], and a fairly deep half S stamped on the back of the headstock. There also some bruising to the edge of the headstock from some impact blems that turns this roasted clear whiteish.. Some light marks at the end of the truss channel from a truss tool bumping it, and the rear cover is a little light scratchy from somebody playing it at the show with a scratchy shirt on, and the glossy tops of the pickups are scratchy from being wiped, the bridge pickup with a scratch. Otherwise perfect except for the S stamped on the back of the head. AZ2402ICM_F1800716 - SECOND STOCK - Description tag marked "BUYER DIRECTED SECOND" which tell you nothing so all i can do is describe everything i can find. The slots in the trem cover were horribly cut, there are some sink lines between the covers on the back, and a couple strange outies between the trem cover and the neck recess, and a couple very small "file marks" on the edge of the fretboard not next to a fret, but that's the best description I can give. It also has about a .6mm gap on the treble side of the neck pocket. Otherwise this is one very nice build ICM. S stamped on the back of the head. For whatever reason except you cannot sell a second without it being playable, this neck is perfect, so the heel cracks are the only blems. Beautiful build save the super light S stamped on the head. RG5121DBF_F1903452 - SECOND STOCK - Description tag marked "Failed scratch repair", after a decade of dealing with matter clears evidently somebody thought you could do a scratch repair on one. Had to be a new guy. Basically the upper part of the body was wet sanded and, possibly polished after, so semi sheen, the rest of the front matte as it should be. If I was a buyers and a DIY I'd wetsand the rest of the front to the same degree and then polish it to an even semi gloss, or whatever it turns out, it would all be even. The top has a orange peel look because the matte finish is never perfectly smooth, nor is a gloss, but they sand the gloss down and polish, obviously not happening on a matte. There are 2 light fine "bracelet" trails off the top edge that are not scratches, just where it was touched, and 2 longer "fingernail?" trails running from under the strings to below the pickups. Not sure how somebody was playing to leave them but there are as many picking styles as there are players. There's is a tiny indentation on the top edge but I believe this is factory, these oil finish guitars rarely survive the build in perfect condition, much less a 4 day NAMM show. The fret ends micro meshed at HUSA to make them better for the show, and done very very well with almost zero polishing to the satin clear on the edges of the fretboard. Everything you can see if you look close in raking light, but you can't really see at all just looking at it. The body was either by chance or mated to a neck that's had a factory touch up that's flawless, you cannot tell it's there except that you can see the depth of the fill at straight on angle. Really nice piece of rosewood on this one for any Ibanez 8 string. S stamped in the back of the head. One is dead center of the trem cavity running rout to the strap pin, the next 2" lower at the bottom edge of the trem rout that stops at the rout, the long "line" is between the edge of the trem rout and the knob and runs from the body edge to near the switch. There is also a small round polished spot off the edge you can see in the pictures. S stamped on the back of the headstock, otherwise perfect. It's covered in plenty of fingerprints but the fretboard verifies it is the 2014, 2015, and 2016 NAMM Show guitar, finally replaced in 2017 by the UCS. After a thorough wipedown it survived the 3 shows in surprisingly clean condition with a bruise to the back edge in the belly cut, and 2 very small one on the back bottom edge. A rivet trail that just made a brighter line in the matte black, and a short scratch from the lower ear of the neck pickup rout. Super clean for 3 tours of duty! S stamped on the back of the head. Scuff on the trem cover. Glad they put a condition tag on it as it says damaged case which I wouldn't have seen, one of the feet is missing. Light S stamped on the back of the head. There's a couple signs of handling, a short 2mm scratch on the side about 4" from the strap pin with light scratching on either side of it, and a small scuff on the bottom edge of the headstock toward the tip, otherwise it's in almost untouched condition with a few fingernail scratches only. S5527QFXDPB - F1427290 - SECOND STOCK - Description tag marked "Discolored top" pointing to the area of the tip of the lower horn, where around the very tip of the horn is a few shades lighter than the Dark Purple, but this continues in a narrow band around the perimeter of the top, my guess would be the tape line over the binding wasn't done very well, but in no way is the lighter line distracting, it's a very beautiful guitar with a crazy quilt top. S5527TKS - F1515680 - SECOND STOCK - There is no flaw description tag, the guitar was covered in fingerprints, it's got plenty of scratchy tee scratches on the back, about 20 fingernail scratches under the pickups, and there's a light 3" scuff [a few fine scratches together in a line] that runs curved over the trem and either started or finished on the bass side baseplate where the cosmo is marred. It's not the NAMM Show guitar because none was shown this year, I'm not sure if it's a demo but the box is very clean and doesn't give any clues, anybodies guess. There's a strange spot in the center piece of maple right in the volute that's a very strange distortion in the wood, wood does weird stuff sometimes. They look more like pimples to me but either way they are barely noticeable, nobody is going to be sorry they bought this guitar, the worst flaw as with many is the S stamped on the back of the head. S5521BRB - Second Stock - This is the 2015 NAMM Show guitar. It survived the show prefect and new in every way. Maybe picked up and looked at a couple times. The techs must be so backed up they released a batch of these guitars without really inspecting them for flaws. This guitar would typically have gone to a dealer to sell as new, because with the exception of the S stamped on the back of the headstock it is new in every way, and a very nice example picked out for the show. The box with a United Airline sticker to JFK with Bensalem delivery address so this was an early arrival and probably also shown at the sales meetings with the reps in December. FR6UCBKF - Second Stock, this guitar was covered in some sticky goo between the bridge and butt end which took about 20 minutes to clean off, however it got there is unknown, but I believe this was the reason this body was being mated to this neck [as there are 2 different warranty cards in the case] to make one Second and one good guitar. The neck has a nut the factory never finished, unfinished on the corners and front and back edge, which I will finish of course. During the neck swap they ended up chipping the bass edge of the neck pocket but it didn't matter as it was already going to be a Second. My best guess anyway from the evidence. RG920QMRDT - Second Stock - The guitar is perfect, box tag marked as "Discontinued" as the only reason it was deemed a Second. The fret ends have been shaved back to cure the exposed ends from neck shrinkage so they are much more Prestige than J Custom. It has been stamped twice "S" on the back of the head.
